Abstract/Description: | Present study focuses on the comparative evaluation of ovarian development and maturity in CiJanna punctata during spawning season, reared in fish cages (installed in confined water body) in relation to fish from natural water bodies of Punjab. During study period (March to August) temperature in confined water was recorded between 22.8 to 31 .3°C, while pH (7.23-7.87), dissolved oxygen (6.1-7.2 mg/L), alkalinity (194.4-286.0 mglL), ammonia (0.068-0.106 mg/L), phosphate (0.074-0.212 mglL) and nitrate (0.310-0.472 mg/L), which were within acceptable limit. Condition factor (K) of C. punctata was recorded highest during the month of july, in cages average value was 1.36 while it was1.27 in case of fish collected from natural resources. No significant differences in Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) was recorded in the fish kept in cages (5.73) as compared to specimens collected from natural resources (5.74), with peak maturity in july. Histological observations on seasonal maturity reveal that C. punctata was not fully matured in the month of june, while it attained full maturity in the month of July. Overall, the fish shows full maturity under cages in captive conditions, under the agro climatic conditions of Punjab. |
