Two rearing expenmetnts on cyst produchon of Artenlta were carned out tn a salt pan a Kelambakam,near Chennai Thereanngmed~a contalnlng thisparthenogentlc sham of Artem~c when ennched wth both organlc and lnorganlc fei-hlllzers was found to augment water ana soil ferhhty, leadrng to mcrease In population and cyst producbon After the stocking, there was an initial decrease ln the population of Artemra However, the population Increased when the first generahon of naupll~ emerged dunng 16Ih - 19Ih day of culture Ovo-viv~parity was not~cedwhenthesalmity was around 115ppt A density of99 nos /1 was attained with chicken manunng from an mlhal stochng of 40 nos 11, wh~le the inorganic ferhllzatlon yielded a st111 hlgher population density of 176 nos /1 from an lnitlai of 16 nos /I From 61>' day onwards, sal~nltyrelated stress was created by gradually mcreaslng the sal~nlty up to 160-200 ppt, whtch resulted m the change of reproduchon from ovo-viviparity to oviparlty Durlng the penod of cyst produchon, adults showlng ov~par~ty were found to be more among total adults tn the populahon Intenslve and frequent rams caused sudden reducbon In salmlty, whrch has adversely affected thepopulahon,parhcularly those of adults In addition, strahhcabon m saluuty was noticed A cyst produchon of 3 9 kg/ha/189 days was obtalned in the pond without ferhluatlon, whle ~t was 8 6 kglha/189 days m the pond wlth organlc fertilizer However, a higher produchon 21 32 kg/ha/199 days was acheved wlth rnorgaruc ferkluers
