Abstract/Description: | Catla catla is widely distributed across India, Pakistan,Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar (Reddy, 2005) and animportant species in fisheries and aquaculture (Chonder,1999). In India, C. catla is naturally found in the Indo-Gangetic river system. A drastic population decline in C. catlaby about 87% in the middle stretches of the Ganges in theperiod 1958–1994 (Payne et al., 2004) was mainly due tooverfishing and habitat alterations (Reddy, 2005). Addition-ally, farmed Catla could also have escaped, intermingling withwild stocks and leading to the loss of genetic variation(Ferguson et al., 1995). |
