dc.description.abstract | Sisorid catfish of the genus Glyptothorax Blyth are widelydistributed, with as many as 32 nominal species reported fromIndia (Talwar and Jhingran, 1991; Jayaram, 2006) where theytypically inhabit fast-flowing hillstreams and faster flowingstretches of larger rivers. They are distinguishable by adistinctive thoracic adhesive apparatus (de Pinna, 1996).Kullander et al. (1999) revised its distribution as beingwidespread in South Asia, from the Tigris-Euphrates basineastward to Vietnam and eastern China. The native distribu-tion of Glyptothorax brevipinnis is not well documented inIndia and exact locations are not specified in the literatureexcept for records from the Garhwal region of WesternHimalaya (Singh et al., 1987; Jayaram, 2006) and the SiangRiver in Arunachal Pradesh, Northeastern Himalaya, (Nathand Dey, 2000). However, Karmakar (2000) reported on thedistribution of 16 Glyptothorax species in the Himalayandrainage system (Eastern Himalaya, Northeastern Himalya,Central Himalaya and Northwestern Himalaya) withoutany record of G. brevipinnis. We collected G. brevipinniswhile conducting germplasm exploration in the Ken River,Central India, which is a new distributional record for thisspecies. | en_US |
