Abstract/Description: | Cobia, Rachycentron canadum, commonly known as Black Kingfish, is a fast growing warm water marine fish with pinkish white flesh. It is considered as a promising candidate species for farming due to its fast growth rate, excellent meat attributes and easy adaptability to farming conditions. In the Indian scenario, it has the added advantage of being suitable for ecological aquaculture production linked to rural fishing villages along the long coast line. Envisaging the potential and prospects for cobia farming in India, captive broodstock development was first initiated during 2006 at the Mandapam Regional Centre of ICAR – Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Tamil Nadu, India. The first successful captive breeding and fingerling production of cobia was achieved in 2010 in India by the ICAR – CMFRI, Mandapam Regional Centre and since then, cobia fingerlings are being supplied to the entire coastal regions of the country for farming. Cobia fish is popularly known by the common names - Black kingfish, Black salmon, runner or sergeant fish, crab eater and Sea Murrel. |
