dc.description.abstract | Floods damages have a significant impact on the socio-economic life in the form of crop damage, loss of lives and livestock's disruption of communication and soil erosion, including fisheries, which is recognized as an influential sector. Assam suffers enormous losses due to recurrent and extensive flooding in the low lying areas of the region. In this study, an attempt has been made to analyze the impact of 2017 floods on socio-economic status and income distribution of the flood-affected fish farmers in the state Assam, India. A multistage sampling technique was used to sample respondents for the study. A pre-structured interview schedule was used to obtain information from the fish farmers. Percentage analysis, one way ANOVA, Lorenz curve, and Gini-coefficient were used to analyze the collected data. Results from analysis of data showed that the average annual income of the flood-affected fish farmers is Rs 82606.86, and there is a significant difference in their incomes among the districts. Nearly, 36% of the respondents were in the middle age group of 36- 45 years, 76% of the respondent lives in nuclear family and majority (54%) of them has a family size of 5-7. The flood-affected fish farmers lost 71.33% of their income from fisheries due to 2017 flood. Gini-coefficient for respondent fish farmers has been found to be 0.53 before the flood and 0.78 after the flood. Lower income group fish farmers suffer nearly 79.2% losses due to flood and the higher income group fish farmers suffer 55.74% losses. This study recommends the need for preventive measures against a future occurrence of flood for fisher in flood-prone areas. The amount of compensation or relief fund that is commensurable to the losses of the flood-affected fisher is recommended timely. | en_US |
