Abstract/Description: | : A 90 days experiment was conducted to study the effect of biofloc on immune response and antioxidant status of milkfish, Chanos chanos reared in biofloc-based tanks by the addition of different carbon sources. Four biofloc treatments and one control were compared: Biofloc-based tanks under zero-water exchange with four different carbohydrate sources (Sorghum, potato, Yam, glucose) and clear water tanks operated with high water exchange and without the addition of carbohydrate referred to as control. The milkfish were cultured for 90 days and immune response was analyzed at 45 days interval. At various assay days of the experiment, the serum biochemical parameters (protein, albumin and globulin) of the fish in the biofloc treatments especially in yam based biofloc group were significantly higher than those of the fish in the control group (P< 0.05). Similarly, the non-specific immune parameters (respiratory burst, Myeloperoxidase and lysozyme activity) in the liver of the milkfish was significantly higher in the yam based biofloc treatments compared to other biofloc and the control group (P < 0.05). Decreased serum cortisol, serum glucose and antioxidant status in the liver of milkfish were found in the four biofloc treatment groups, particularly in yam based biofloc system. Not much significant differences were found in all of the above parameters after 45 days of sampling, but clear significant differences were observed after 90 days of culture between the biofloc and control group. The increasing trend in immune parameters and the decreasing trend in stress parameters indicates a continuous and positive effect of biofloc in fish. The results indicated that bioflocs by using yam as a carbon source could enhance the innate immunity and health condition of milkfish and considered as a useful technology for disease prevention in intensive culture practices of milkfish. |
