dc.description.abstract | Pearlspot Etroplus suratensis(Bloch 1790) is commonly called as green chromide, banded Etroplus, banded pearlspot or striped chromide, while it is popularly known as 'Karimeen' in Kerala, a sought-after delicacy among fish foodies. It is known as Sethukendai or Paatameen in Tamil, Duwanachepa in Telugu, Pitulkus In Hindi, Kalunder in Konkani, Elimeenu in Kanada. The natural geographical distribution of pearlspot is the peninsular India and Srilanka where it forms an integral part of the traditional cuisine. Over time, pearlspot has gained increasing popularity as a delicacy in other regions of country as well. Kerala has been the hub of pearlspot fisheries and aquaculture in the year 2010 it was declared as the state fish. In Kerala, market price of pearlspot ranges over Rs 350-500 per kg and farmers generally synchronize the partial harvests with spurt in market demand coinciding with festivals for the best prices. | en_US |
