Abstract/Description: | Brachyuran crabs are one of the most traded seafood commodities across the world. Many species of crabs support important commercial fisheries in many fishing countries. Although crabs are high valued seafood, only few of them are farmed, for example, Eriocheir sinensis, species of genus Scylla and Portunus pelagicus. This chapter aims to provide short descriptions on various diseases affecting crabs along with possible treatment and control. For the completion of the topic, crab species, which are not farmed are also included in the review. Diseases of crabs may be caused by pathogens like bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. The combination of pathogens is also result in the occurrence of few diseases. Further, it becomes complex to understand the cause of the disease either nutritional, environmental and/or management deficiencies. Hence, this chapter is aimed at providing short description on various diseases affecting crabs, along with possible treatment and/or control measures. |
