Abstract/Description: | Reactions taking place in trophogenic and tropholytic zones of the reservoir cause substantial change in the quality of the water column from surface to bottom. The kinetics of these reactions are reflected in the magnitude of variations in the chemical parameters like pH, DO, CO,, COT, HCOT and hence the productivity of the reservoir czn be evaluated from the study of the chemical stratification. Productive reservoirs will have high activities both on the surface and at the bottom and will show sharp changes in the chemical parame ters from surface to bottom. Studies on the occurrence of chemical stratification have been made in some reservoirs by the workerslike Sreenivasan (19711), Pathak (1979), & Natarajan (1977). However, the knowledge about chemical stratification is still incomplete The present paper givesa detailed background of the chemical stratification in a tropical im poundment ( Bhavanisagar ) and the evaluation of productivity of reservoirs in general. Material and methods Water samples from different depths of the water column were collected with the help of Vandorn sub-surface sampler from the profundal zone of lentic, interm:diate, Bhavani and Moyar sectors of Bhavanisagar reservoir auring June 1974 to March 1977. Lentic sector was sampled in January, April, May, June. July and October ; intermediate sector in February, May, August, and November, and Bhavani and Moynr sectors in March, June, September and Dzcember. Water temperature, $issolved oxygen, pH, free carbon dioxide and bicarbonate alkalinity were determinedat the collection spots; but soluble salts were mea sured using specific conductivity meter in the laboratory. The detailed procedure of the analysis was followed as given by Jhingran et a/. ( 1969 ). |
