Abstract/Description: Whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Genndius) is a polyphagous vector threatening potato seed cultivation by transmitting Gemini virus, resulting in the Potato Apical Leaf Curl Disease in North-Western India. During the last decade, it has assumed a significant status owing to favorable weather conditions due to change in climate. The whitefly has started appearing early on the potato crop and a rapid buildup of its population is being observed recently, which may threaten potato seed production programme in this region. Maximum and minimum temperature range of (16.0-26.60C) and (6.5-8.20C), respectively, influenced the population buildup of whitefly in main crop season of 2013-14 as compared to maximum and minimum temperature range of (11.4-31.90C) and (8.5-14.90C) during the same season of 2003-04 along with other climatic factors. During 2003-04, the whitefly population was first recorded in October, declined in November and again picked up in December before finally diminishing in January on potato cultivars during early and main crop seasons. In contrast, during 2013-14, the whitefly remained active on potato cultivars throughout the crop growth. Highest mean population buildup of whitefly per shoot was recorded on Kufri Surya (11.2) followed by Kufri Lauvkar (8.32), Kufri Jyoti (8.09), Kufri Anand (4.55), Kufri Chipsona-1 (3.06) and Kufri Chipsona-2 (2.47) during the early crop season of 2003. Almost same trend of preference by whitefly to potato cultivars was recorded during 2013; however, there was a 1-2 fold increase in population buildup. Comparison of whitefly population developed on potato cultivars revealed that its population on main crop showed 2-3 fold increase on all potato cultivars. Besides that, whitefly remained active throughout the crop season during 2013-14 as compared to 2003-04. Therefore, potato crop grown for seed will be require better management tact ties right from planting till halum cutting specially in this region.
