Abstract/Description: | September 2015/Accepted: 31 March 2016 The National Academy of Sciences, India 2016 Abstract Red leaf colored Amaranth forms have industrial application as natural colorant in products of jelly, ice creams and beverages. Hunterlab leaf colour parameters are significantly correlated to betacyanin composition by various workers in Amaranth. Leaf color variation in 5 green, 14 red and 5 intermediate leaf colored genotypes was analyzed by lightness (L*), red/green ratio (a*), yellow/blue ratio (b*) and chroma (saturation/intensity of color). L* values were high (37–50) in all the five green genotypes. ATR 60, ATR 18 and ATR 17 showed significantly high a* values of 12–15. Significantly high b* value (31.01) was found in ATF 159. Leaf color was scored in 30,350 progeny seedlings of 17 genotypes to estimate the out-crossing rate. Leaf color of the progenies of dark red accessions displayed least out-crossing. The results were compared with previous reports on pigment composition and genetics of leaf color in amaranth. A potential betacyanin pigment rich (416.26 ± 19 lgg -1 FW) genetic stock ATR 18 (IC-598190) was identified. |
