Chickpea production has grown from 3.65 to 5.63 million tonnes between 1950-51 and 2004-05, registering a growth of 0.58% annually. During the period, area has marginally declined from 7.57 to 6.67 million hectare and the productivity has steadily increased to 844 kg/ha from 482 kg/ha (IIPR, 20009).
