A toxin extracted from Pennisetum typhoides infected with S. graminicola was not host-specific and induced wilting in cuttings of tomato, Phaseolus mungo, P. aureus [Vigna radiata], wheat, Eleusine coracana and maize, but rice was unaffected. Seedlings grown from seed of P. typhoides which had been soaked in the toxin developed some of the typical symptoms associated with downy mildew infection. The toxin is a glycopeptide and had no effect on any micro-organisms tested.
