Description Urban and peri-urban population is rising rapidly in the
developing countries. The available estimates reveal that by 2020 the
developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America will be the
home of some 75 per cent of all urban dwellers (CGIAR, 2003).
India is no exception, where urban population has been increasing at
an alarming rate of more than 3 per cent annually. The forecasts are
that by 2030, the urban population will be 41 per cent of the total
population in India (UN, 2002). Growing urbanisation and rising
