Description Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is grown on more than
11.9 million hectares worldwide, with a 10.9 million ton
production, and is the second most important legume
crop after dry beans. It is widely grown as an annual crop
in South and West Asia, and in East and North Africa (Fig.
1). India is the largest chickpea producer on 8.2 m ha with
