Description In laboratory studies in Andhra Pradesh, India, on cultivars of pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan] with lesser or greater susceptibility to Melanagromyza obtusa (Mall.), the walls of the pods of more susceptible varieties had significantly lower concentrations of total soluble sugars and a smaller ratio of sugars to nitrogen, but no significant differences in the total nitrogen or total polyphenol contents. In plants that had been sprayed with water in the field, there were lower concentrations of all 3 constituents studied in the pod walls than in untreated plants
