Description Chromosome and/or ploidy manipulations have facilitated the exchange of genetic material between wild species and their cultivated crop relatives, between cultivated species and between interspecific hybrids. This review examines the subject under the following headings: barriers to interspecific hybridization (abnormal embryo development, endosperm disintegration and abnormal development of ovular tissue); diploid and polyploid crop species; applications of ploidy manipulations (increasing crossability and hybrid viability, manipulating endosperm balance number, using unreduced (2n) gametes, providing greater versatility for gene transfer, production of hybrid and polyploid bridges, and transfer of chromosomes, genes or gene blocks). Examples are taken from work with a wide range of crop species
