Title Photosensitivity of urediniospore germination in Puccinia arachidis

Creator Subrahmanyam, P
Reddy, P M
McDonald, D

Subject Groundnut

Description Light inhibited germination of P. arachidis (cause of groundnut rust) urediospores. The threshold value for complete inhibition of urediospore germination was 5000 W/m². Wavelengths of 430, 510 and 620 nm inhibited germination but had no adverse effect on germ-tube elongation of pregerminated urediospores. Hydrated urediospores were more sensitive to light than non-hydrated urediospores. Inhibition was not permanent, and spores germinated when returned to the dark
