Description Successful pulse production in dry areas depends on the ability to obtain
economic yields With limited water supply. Management systems should
consider: (1) matching crops and cropping sequences with seasonal rainfall;
(2) cultural practices designed to maximise water conservation; (3) soil
management to prevent compaction and the formation of tillage pans; (4)
adequate control of pests; (5) appropriate seedbed preparation and fertilization;
and (6) timely planting. These objectives can be accomplished using
conservation tillage systems, improved methods of fertilization and exploitation
of nitrogen fixation, and appropriate mechanisation.
