Abstract Diamond-like carbon (DLC) film has been deposited, for the first time, from the soot of camphor, a natural source, by a simple vacuum deposition technique. This method of deposition is simple, convenient and much faster than the conventional gas cracking technique usually adopted for the DLC film deposition. The DLC thin film is characterized by Raman, Fourier transform IR, solid state C-13 NMR, electron spin resonance and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Preliminary results (X-ray diffraction and SEM analyses) suggest that polycrystalline diamond film may also be obtained from this source.
