Description In India, the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (C.M.F.R.I.) is the pioneering institute under ICAR
carrying out research and development work in the fields of mariculture, alternative livelihood and sustainable fish
production in the country. The institute has developed various technologies for mariculture of shrimps, mussel, marine
ornamentals, oysters, crab, lobster, seaweed and artificial feeds. At present the institute is laying emphasis on cage
farming in open sea for the broodstock development, maturation and spawning of fin fish and shell fishes. The institute
is also taking a proactive role in human resource development in fisheries sector and capacity building in the frontier
areas such as breeding and seed production of marine fishes, nutrition, aquatic environment, biotechnology, genetics,
etc. In this background, the Institute is organizing a winter School entitled "Recent Advances in Breeding and
Larviculture of marine fin fish and shell fish" during 30.12.2008 to 19.1.2009 (21 days) for the benefit of college/
university/institute teachers, research workers, scientists of ICAR and other research organization with a view to
disseminate information in this vital field of aquaculture and enhance their competence in this field.
