Description This study examined the impact of antidiabetic therapy on blood rheology in diabetics who do not have retinal, vascular or other diseases. Whole blood viscosity and plasma viscosity were not altered by treatment although the values were significantly increased when compared to normal controls. Red cell filtration was not altered by the presence of diabetes or treatment. Red cell aggregation was high in nearly all cases. The results suggest that antidiabetic therapy does not improve blood viscosity or red cell aggregation, and changes in these haemorheologic parameters do not necessarily lead to development of diabetic complications.
