Description Aluminium activation by In and Zn in chloride media was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopic studies. The result shows that activation of Al by In is due to dissolution-redeposition steps. It is suggested that In exhibits variable valencies during the dissolution and redeposition processes. Incorporation of any of these lower valent ions changes the defect structure of the passive film leading to an increase in anionic vacancies and a decrease in the number of electrons, promoting an active dissolution to Al. The role of Zn has been to moderate the localized attack by a precipitation process.
