Description |
Void growth and coalescence is one of the mechanisms responsible for ductile fracture. The growth of a void in the neck of a sheet under a superimposed hydrostatic tension is modelled in the present paper and a simplified equation of void growth is proposed using both linear and non-linear forms of the Rice and Tracey equation. The influence of superimposed hydrostatic tension on the relative volume change of a void in the neck is studied using this analysis. The results show that the consideration of superimposed hydrostatic tension enhances the rate of void growth in the neck resulting in higher volume fraction of voids. The analysis also provides an explanation for Breaver's experimental observation on initiation of fracture from within the central region of the necking band.
