Description |
Use of lasers to form high performance surface alloys has become a very important means of modifying surface properties of many active metals and alloys. Perhaps, it is the only versatile method to change the surface composition without altering the bulk properties of materials. Modification of low alloy steels for heat exchanger applications, formation of superaustenitic stainless steel surface alloy for sea water applications and high Ni and Cr clad to protect the fireside corrosion in boilers have been tried successfully. Also, a new method of fabrication of materials by laserforming is described which may give relief to scientists and engineers who have perhaps exhausted all methods of forming materials which can sustain high strength and corrosion protection at high temperatures.
