Description Experiments are conducted in quasi 2-dimensional cylinders with three different radii (R = 4, 8 and 16 cm) and thickness 1 or 2 cm, using narrow cuts of glass and steel beads of diameter d = 1, 2 and 4 mm and sand particles of diameter 0.38 and 0.76 min for several different Froude numbers (F-T = omega (2) R/g, where omega is the angular speed and g the acceleration due to gravity). Streakline photographs are used to obtain the shape of the free surface and the layer thickness profile, delta (x), where x is the distance along the surface. Experimental results are in good agreement with the predictions of the model by Khakhar et al. (1997. Phys. Fluids. 9:31-43), which follows the same scaling as the experimental data. Scaled layer thickness profiles (delta (x)/R) for the same values of size ratio and Froude number, superimpose for a given material.
