Description |
Crown ethers and cryptands have proved to be versatile extractants for alkali and alkaline earths. These are equally promising for the extraction of transition elements. In this article, extraction equilibria with crown ethers is outlined and the factors influencing these extractions are enumerated. Applications of crown ethers for separation of metals are described separately under s-, p- and d-block elements. The use of these extractants in spectrophotometry, fluorimetry extraction chromatography and ion-selective electrodes is outlined. A brief account of the applications of these compounds for analysis of metal pollutants in environment is presented. Data on the optimum conditions for solvent extraction, viz. pH, nature of diluent, counter anion used, extraction concentration, stripping agent, interferences, and other special features are presented in tables, separately for s-, p- and d- block elements.
