Description |
Introducing a row of holes at the neutral axis of a beam under pure bending effectively reduces the self weight of the beam. The amount of weight reduction achieved depends on the maximum permissible hole size. Here, the concept of optimising the hole size based on the specific failure moment is presented. Variation of specific failure moment as a function of D/W (hole diameter/laminate width) is evaluated based on the net moment of inertia and gross moment of inertia for beams made of isotropic and orthotropic materials. The sensitivity of the characteristic dimension of the point stress criterion on the permissible hole size is also studied. The hole size at maximum specific failure moment is constant for all the characteristic dimensions for both the unidirectional and cross-ply laminates.
