Description A high-resolution method in the form of the essentially nonoscillatory scheme is used to solve Maxwell's equations in the time domain in a finite volume time-domain framework. This formulation is used to predict the radar cross section of perfectly conducting scatterers coated with a very thin layer of lossy or nonlossy dielectric. A direct formulation is used in which the Maxwell's equations are solved in freespace, as well as in the dielectric layer, without any special treatment. Traditionally, the prediction of scattering from very thin dielectric layers without special treatment is known to incur numerical instabilities. Results are presented for the sphere and cone sphere with perfectly conducting surfaces coated with a very thin layer of lossy and nonlossy dielectric.
