Description |
Refinement of grain size by inoculation during electroslag refining ( ESR) is known to improve the mechanical properties of 15CDV6 and modified 15CDV6 steels. The present work examines a new method of introducing inoculant during ESR, resulting in higher recovery of the inoculant. Inoculation with titanium has proved to be an effective method for refinement of grain size. The residual inoculant content has a significant effect on the grain size of the steel. The grain size decreases sharply with titanium content of the steel up to 0.05 - 0.1% depending on the composition of the steel. Beyond this residual titanium content, reduction in grain size is marginal. The grain size of the steel, at any residual titanium content and austenitisation temperature, increases with increasing carbon and chromium contents.
