Description This paper presents a finite-element model for the free vibration analysis of a shape memory alloy (SMA) surface laminated composite cantilever plate. The proposed device is considered to undergo small displacements and small strains. The governing equations are developed utilizing the first-order shear deformation theory, energy balance equations and two-dimensional model of the SMA layer. The finite element is modelled using first-order shear deformation theory and equivalent single-layer assumptions. The plate is considered with clamped-free boundary conditions, and the SMA layer is at the top of the composite plate. Parametric studies are conducted to study the effect on free vibration of varying the SMA volume fraction, the temperature of the SMA, and the thickness, width and stiffness of the composite cantilever plate.
