Description |
A single phase ferromagnetic icosahedral compound was synthesized by mechanical alloying with the nominal composition Al40Cu10Mn25Ge25. The icosahedral alloy exhibits a coercivity of 850 Oe and a magnetization of 1.92 emu g-1 in a field of 11 kOe. The mechanical alloying process introduces disorder and strain, which is indicated by the X-ray diffraction data. The method of preparation has great influence on several physical properties as is found by comparing them with those of melt spun alloy of similar composition. The results are discussed on the basis of strain and disorder introduced in the system owing to the method of preparation.
