E-azobenzene bearing electron-withdrawing and ionizable substituents (e.g. 2) exhibits solvatochromic behaviour, high % of Z isomer at photostationary state, and very fast thermal Z --> E isomerization in protic polar solvents. A rotational mechanism has been suggested for the isomerization process.
