The reaction of (Z,Z)-cycloocta-1,5-diene under modified Woodward-Prevost conditions (potassium iodate-iodine-potassium acetate in glacial acetic acid) results in the formation of functionalised bicyclic systems (3,4) and the cis diol 2; a plausible mechanism for their formation is described.
