Description By using the Boltzmann transport equations, we calculate the dissipation produced by a spin-polarized current. The results can be interpreted in terms of a circuit model which is also commonly used to explain the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect. We find that due to the spin-flip scattering of electrons, the GMR effect is associated with extra Joule heating, which is more localized than the spin-diffusion length.
