Description Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline ErSn0.5Ge1.5 have been studied. It is found that substitution of Ge for Sn in ErSn1.1Ge0.9 results in a nominal increase in the magnetic moment, but a considerable enhancement in the magnetocaloric effect. The magnetocaloric effect, calculated from magnetization data, shows a large value of 13 J/kg K for a field of 50 kOe. Magnetization, heat capacity, and magnetocaloric data reveal field induced metamagnetic transition in this compound. (c) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.
