Description |
The present study was aimed at identifying the most suitable mycorrhizal- Rhizobium combination that can act synergistically to improve productivity in green gram. The AM fungal associates of green gram in their traditional cultivated fields in South India were identified. Identification of a suitable isolate of Rhizobium that can enhance productivity in green gram was also done. The use of different AM fungi and P. indica individually and in combination with Rhizobium on green gram was examined. The utility of AM fungal consortium consisting of two species of Glomus viz., G. mosseae and G. microcarpum either in the presence or absence of Rhizobium under different regimes of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers in increasing the growth and yield of green gram was also analyzed. Two species of Glomus (G. mosseae and G. microcarpum), and one species each of Gigaspora (G. margarita) and Scutellospora (Scutellospora sp.) were the AM fungal associates with green gram in the field conditions in South India. Bacterial isolates from six different host plants were tested on the crop and the isolate from Phaseolus multiflorus (R6) was found to be the most effective isolate to enhance productivity. Among the different AM fungi tested for their influence on the crop, Glomus mosseae and Glomus microcarpum were found promising, although their interaction effect with Rhizobium differed. P. indica was not found suitable for green gram in promoting growth and yield. The AM fungal consortium consisting of Glomus mosseae and Glomus microcarpum, along with the successful Rhizobium isolate and NPK amendments at different doses revealed that AM application could reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers for improving productivity in green gram. However, the present study indicated that individual application of Glomus microcarpum, rather than the consortium of Glomus mosseae and Glomus microcarpum is more effective on the crop.
