The Thesis presented herein under the title; ALLEVIATION OF INDUSTRIAL SICKNESS: A CRITICAL STUDY. Sickness has been widespread, both in public and the private sector. Enormous funds of the public and the government are blocked in sick industries. It is in the interest of the nation that the sick industries are rehabilitated, if possible, or else speedily would up to liquidate their assets and use the receipts in a productive manner. Industrial sickness is a universal problem faced by all the countries in the world. Indian economy, which was pre dominantly an Agrarian economy, started its pursuit for industrialization after attaining its independence in 1947. The industrial policy resolution of 1948 marked the evolution of Indian industrial policy; and thereafter with the economic and social development, there has been a shift in the industrial policy from the directed and regulated economy in 1948 and 1956 policy resolution to the free market economy in 1991. Right from the inception of the industrialisation, many industries suffered huge financial losses resulting in their closure which led to loss of employment, government revenue and the dent on huge financial assets which were invested in the setting up of these industries. In order to improve the condition of industries, Government appointed a committee known as the Tiwari Committee on the basis of the Tiwari Committee Report of 1983, the Govt. passed an enactment i.e. Sick Industrial Companies (Special Provision) Act, of 1985 (SICA) in the wider public interest and with a view to secure timely detection of the sick and potentially viable Sick Industrial Companies and for the speedily determination of preventive, ameliorative, remedial and other measures which need to be taken with respect to such companies by a board of experts.
