| Description |
Using a combination of stratified and purposive sampling was used to select four districts namely Chiradzulu, Thyolo, Balaka, Mchinji. From each of these districts 4 largest pigeon pea producing sections were purposively selected followed by a random selection of 3 villages from each of these sections . 13 farmers were randomly selected from a complete list of all farm families in each of the sampled villages. Thus, a total of 594 households were surveyed. The same set of households were surveyed both during the baseline survey in 2008 and follow up survey in 2010.
