Description The dynamic environment of the estuaries and adjoining
backwaters plays a vital role in the fishery of the
coastal areas in general and the prawn fishery in particular.
Because of the great demand for prawns in the fish trade
circle and in view of the limitations in the exploitation of
natural resource, there has been global awakening, in recent
years, to find out ways and means for augmenting prawn
production through coastal aquaculture, one of the essential
inputs required for successful prawn culture is the availability and the timely supply of prawn seed for stocking in the fields. In nature# larvae# postlarvae and juveniles of
different species of prawns occur throughout the year in the
inshore waters and in the estuaries and backwaters. However,
their abundance varies from place to place and with season
depending on the spawning intensity, survival of eggs and
larvae, spawning season and the ecological variations.
