Subject Climate Change

Description With the total fish production of 10.8 million tones today, its
demand in India has been increasing consistently with the increased
'income of the consumers and their growing health consciousness. It is
estimated that to meet the domestic demand the country requires additional
10 million tons offish by 2050. To maintain the growth pace of the sector,
the fisheries and aquaculture, therefore, need to tackle the challenges of
resource competition, water scarcity, climate change, growing disease
problems and several other technical, environmental and social issues.
Climate change impacts such as variations in rainfall and temperature,
drought, extreme weather events and changes in oceanographic features,
affecting the fisheries resources, farming conditions, fishery distribution
and habitat changes, have been found to be quite significant and alarming.
Therefore, identification of the vulnerabilities associated with climate
change events on fishery resources and coming up with resilience measures
as well as adaptation strategies are urgent necessities. An attempt has been
made to collate and synthesize information on future climate change impacts
and challenges posed on the fisheries and aquaculture sector and explain
various mechanisms for addressing these challenges. Immediate necessity
- - of developing an action plan to mitigate the impact of such climate change
scenario in fisheries and aquaculture has been emphasized. Further, the
paper also envisioned the use of Representative Concentrafion Pathway.
(RCP) scenarios (in 2030,2050 and 2080) developed by the IPCC in concert
with predictive modelling techniques to gauge the intensity of future changes
likely to occur in the fisheries sector.
