Description Farming of mussels, oysters and clams has been developed along empirical lines, very often based exclusively on practical experience. A better understanding, however, of the complex interactions of the biotic and abiotic environmental parameters on growth o f these molluscs and a more specific interpretation of the results obtained in the field, can be achieved only by laboratory experiments where all the experimental conditions are precisely defined and kept constant as much as possible. By a precisely defined change of one of these experimental conditions, it is possible to find out how an animal is affected by this specific change of its environment.
