Abstract Concern about relationship between diet and health is long standing. In Modern times there is an increasing awareness among the consumers about the relationship between nutrition and health. Along with this, there was an attempt on the part of manufacturers of food products to claim specific nutritional or health benefits for their products and consumers have found it extremely difficult to make proper judgments when selecting foods. This is still an evolving field and there is no uniformity in the regulations at the international level. US laws require mandatory disclosure of 14 food components and voluntary disclosure of some other components. There is a specified format for presenting the label. Most foods for which nutrition labeling is mandatory are processed and packaged in a manufacturing plant Standardized analytical techniques are used for determining the nutrient contents of food. Information from standard databases also can be used for the purpose. Consumers should be properly educated so that full benefits can be derived out of the 'nutrition facts' given along with the food items. Even though this is an emerging field we must be fully equipped to meet the requirments of the international community in this regard.
