| Abstract |
The genus salmonella is named after an American Bacteriologist D.E. Salmon, and belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae. Th bacterium is Gram negative, and with few exceptions, motile due to the presence of peritrichous flagella. At present approximately 2200 serotypes are known to exist based on the 67 O-antigen groups and numerous H-antigen, recognized so far. The classification scheme of Edwards & Ewing (1972), recognizes three species. From the epidemiological point of view, salmonella can be classified into three main groups. |
