Description

Large cardamom in LDPE pouches when fumigated with phosphine at 1.5 and 3.0 g/m3 for 7 days, methyl bromide at 16 and 32 g/m3 for 1 day, ethyl formate at 300 g/m3 for 4 days or CO2 80-90% for 10 days, aerated for 10 days before determining the residues and subsequently stored at room temperature for 180 days was free from infestation; its overall quality was comparable to that of fresh sample. After 7 days of aeration, methyl bromide residue was 3.8-8.0 ppm, while phosphine did not persist. However, 3.0 to 6.0% of volatile oil was lost in fumigated samples after 4th day of aeration, but there was no significant change in its oil composition. Methyl bromide and phosphine were quite effective against the target pest Lasioderma serricorne at 16 g/m3 and 1.5 g/m3, respectively. Ethyl formate and CO2, which have GRAS status, had comparable efficacy at 300 g/m3 and 80 g/m3, respectively.
