Description |
Carotenoids are the major constituents responsible for the radical scavenging ability. The activity of in vitro studies shows that the carotenoids rich fractions i.e., acetone and methanol have shown the maximum activity significantly compared to reference standards. It was also found that the presence of ascorbic acid as one of the ingredient as contributing for the radical scavenging ability of water extract. Carotenoids were also shown significance prevention of lipid peroxidation as seen in case of egg lecithin, human erythrocytes and brain and kidney of rats measured in terms of thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS). Feeding of Dunaliella salina biomass has shown no adverse effects or toxicity on animals upon feeding for 14 days. The net effect on hematological and organ weight was not much varied compared to normal diet fed animals. For the first time, we have estimated the antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity of the carotenoids of the algae and biomass against carbon tetrachloride induced radical toxicity as measured by various biochemical marker enzymes and witnessed by histological studies on liver. |
