Description Hydrocarbon degrading and lipolytic bacteria were isolated from fresh water fish processing wastes. These bacteria
were identified as Pseudomonas sp, Alcaligenes sp, Acinetobacter sp, Aeromonas sp and Lactobacillus sp. The lactic acid bacterium that displayed relatively good growth in medium containing hydrocarbon and lipids as substrates was characterized up to species level based on various morphological, biochemical and physiological properties and identified as Lactobacillus delbruckii subsp lactis. The crude extract from the isolated Lactobacillus sp. indicated this bacterium to be
antagonistic towards several pathogens including Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus, Yersinia enterocolytica and
Escherichia coli.
