Description |
Pre- and postharvest losses in vegetables and fruit grown in India, and efforts aimed at reducing these losses, are overviewed. A major step towards minimizing waste is suggested, i.e. introduction of an integrated refrigerated transport system (cold chain). In combination with measures to ensure correct cultivation, harvesting, preparation, packing and storage practices, this should greatly reduce the very costly losses presently incurred, thus stimulating market confidence and, probably, increasing employment in this industry.
