Description A description is given of a simple paper-strip method to detect (i) acrylonitrile and (ii) ethylene oxide in air and fumigated foodstuffs (paddy, wheat, polished raw rice, semolina, split chick peas, curry powder and dry dates). The original colour of the detector strip i.e. polar-bear-plate 9 B2 or maize yellow 607/3 did not change in air. In the presence of (i) and (ii) it changed to pink, rose, purple and violet depending on the concn. of the fumigants. Min. detectable concn. by this method was 0.34 g/m-3 for (i) and 1.58 g/m-3 for (ii). The desorbed residues of (i) and (ii) from the commodities as determined by GLC were also detected by the strips. The strip detected as little as 1.68 p.p.m. of desorbed (i) and 0.73 p.p.m. of (ii) residues at 80 degree C and 40 degree C, resp.
